The Real Madrid star invited ridicule by bitterly moaning about Iceland’s ‘small mentality,’ however he makes a habit of having the last laugh. He had 10 shots in that match - and his team had 26 attempts in total - so the law of averages suggests they will get things right sooner rather than later.
That’s bad news for an Austrian side who endured their own nightmare against Hungary. An impressive qualifying campaign now seems like a distant memory; Marcel Koller’s boys also fluffed their lines in the warm-up friendlies ahead of the tournament.
