In contrast, the Red Devils have just seemed a little careless in the group stages of the Champions League so far this season. The 2-2 home draw with Benfica and the 3-3 at Old Trafford with Basle in September would have had Sir Alex pulling his hair out. The precarious nature of the group standings should ensure a more disciplined performance this time.

Now last year’s finalists are in a situation where they need a point in France to secure a spot in the knock-out phases. Javier Hernandez has been the primary goal threat in the league recently, and he is sidelined for a month with an ankle injury.

Wellbeck and Rooney are capable of doing the job up front, although neither have scored a league goal in over two months.
