Wimbledon Women's Winner Tip: Sabine Lisicki

Last year's finalist is a grass court specialist in what looks like a particularly open year.

You can drive yourself mad trying to find a contender for the Wimbledon women’s title who doesn’t have a question mark against her name, so we might as well take somebody at a price which justifies the risk.

Serena Williams is always the first name on everybody’s lips but she has slipped up too many times in recent Grand Slams to justify best odds of 7/4 (Coral). Besides which, Boylesports offer money back if your selection loses and the American goes on to triumph instead.

This leads us to last year’s finalist Sabine Lisicki who is a 20/1 shot with that firm. It’s a tough choice whether to take that price or to risk it all by taking the best offering of 33/1 with Sportingbet. We’ll be aggressive and take the latter option given that as an each-way pick we would still get paid at half odds if she finishes runner-up again.

Many are put off by the German’s indifferent form this season but this has been the case before and not been a problem at Wimbledon. The aggressive baseliner has the serve to carry her past most opponents and she now has the benefit of being a crowd favourite.

Nobody in her price bracket, and indeed at much shorter odds, can match her consistency at SW19. The 24-year-old is reaching her peak and can call on the experience of reaching QF-SF-QF-F on her last four visits to London.
