Wimbledon Women's Singles Tip: Victoria Azarenka

The Australian Open champion and world number two could be set for her first final at SW19.

First things first. Serena Williams really should win her sixth Wimbledon title in a fortnight’s time but at best odds of 4/9 (PaddyPower), the bookies have made sure there is no value there.

Instead, we will make more money successfully predicting her likely opponent for the final given the value in each-way betting. StanJames go a best price 8/1 on Victoria Azarenka and that looks like bargain when you consider than 1/2 odds are paid out if she finishes runner-up.

The Belarusian has been knocked out at the semi-final stage at the All-England Club in both of the last two years but I think her time has come to go a step further.

The 23-year-old has landed a kind draw which should see her reach the quarter-finals without any drama. There she is projected to face Petra Kvitova who has really gone off the boil since her triumph here in 2011.

Vika is then likely to face another semi-final clash with Maria Sharapova and the two look incredibly evenly matched. The Russian edged a three-setter in their last big clash, on clay, at the French Open recently, but she trails the head-to-heads 7-6 overall.

Azarenka has more craft to her game and I suspect she is slowly figuring out Sharapova the more they meet. They have never met on grass but it’s the world number two who tends to shade the big matches; Vika leads finals they have played 5-1 and Grand Slam clashes 2-1.
