Men's Australian Open Tip: Tomas Berdych

A five-time Slam semi-finalist including twice in the last three years in Australia. Back from health problems and with Ivanisevic now coaching him, his odds look disrespectful.

In an era where Murray and Djokovic are dominant it’s hard to look elsewhere in the betting columns but strange things still happen and the each-way market offers us some great long shot value.

Tomas Berdych has been written off by all and sundry as demonstrated by best odds of 150/1 available with Coral.

He undeniably had a poor end to 2016 but talk that he’s a spent force could be premature. This is a man who reached the semi-finals of Wimbledon only six months ago and he reached the final four of the Australian Open in both 2014 and 2015.

Lazy journalism dictates that ‘old age’ has caught up with the 31-year-old but the truth is he had appendicitis which forced him to miss the US Open and then he couldn’t recover properly at that stage of the campaign.

But now the Czech is back in good shape and has taken on Goran Ivanisevic as his coach. Now there’s a man who knows a thing or two about winning a first Grand Slam late in a career!

Berdych will need a few good matches to get back in his stride but that’s highly possible; he’s made at least the quarter-finals six years running in Melbourne.

If he keeps that run going then he could make a mockery of his sky-high price.

*Back Berdych each-way and get paid out at half odds if he loses in the final.
