Tsonga v Federer Tip

The 2009 champion has a remarkable 5-set record which he extended in R4 and against Tsonga in Australia.

Roger Federer holds a 9-3 record against his quarter-final opponent Jo-Wilfried Tsonga but the head-to-heads were too close to call before the Swiss star won the last five clashes.

But another feature of recent meetings has been that they keep going the distance. Federer won in five sets at the Australian Open in January and he prevailed 2-1 twice at the ATP World Tour Finals before that.

Given that there was also a marathon match at Wimbledon in 2011 where the Frenchman famously triumphed 3-2, odds of 5/2 (WilliamHill) on five sets looks reasonable.

But if we are tempted by that bet then really we should go the full hog and back Federer to win 3-2 at best odds of 11/2 (Skybet). The 17-time Grand Slam champion has an astonishing 22-1 career record in five-setters which shows where our money should go if it gets tight.
