Ferrer v Tsonga Tip 1

The man known as the grinder is hoping to make it 6th time lucky in Grand Slam semis.

It would be easy to look at Jo-Wilfried Tsonga’s stunning victory over Roger Federer in the quarter-finals, along with his home advantage, and think he will do the business here. But David Ferrer is the better clay-court exponent and I think his time has come.

The 31-year-old from Valencia has featured in five previous Grand Slam semi-finals without ever making a final. He is the ultimate victim of the golden era of tennis which has seen some of the best players of all time dominate relentlessly.

But Ferrer has remarkable fight and he will sense this is his big opportunity. He is ranked one place above Tsonga, he is comfortable at Roland Garros, and has the edge in head-to-heads.

Ferrer leads 2-1 against the Frenchman and their one meeting on clay ended 6-4 6-1 in favour of the Spaniard. I don’t see it being so one-sided again but the same winner should emerge in four or five sets. Ferrer to win 3-1 is a 10/3 shot with Bet365.
