World Cup Favourites Struggle

The favourites won, but did little to inspire during the opening weekend. The big market mover was a team that lost.

England’s World Cup campaign was in danger of lasting as long as the numbers on the back of their shirts. People suggesting that Martin Johnson was literally tearing strips off the players at half time may not have been too wide of the mark. The All Blacks seemingly don’t have to worry too much about their impostors. England remain unchanged at 16/1 (Boylesports) to win the World Cup.

The big movers in the betting were Wales. In a game they could and probably should have won, they came up short, losing to South Africa by one point. Several firms have cut Wales to 40/1, but William Hill still offer 66/1. Despite winning, world champions South Africa are out to 11/1 with Paddy Power to retain their title, having been 9/1 pre tournament.
