York Tips: Monsieur Joe

Finished within 2-lengths of Ortensia and Sole Power in Dubai and can gain his revenge on York’s speed-favouring track.

Sole Power was looking like my selection but Thursday’s rain on the Knavesmire will have dented his chances. Instead, I’ve switched allegiances to Monsieur Joe in the 3.40 York.

Despite his odds, I don’t think he has much to find on form with the main protagonists. In Dubai this winter, he finished 1.75 lengths behind Ortensia and only half a length behind Sole Power in the Group 1, Al Quoz Sprint.

Al Quoz Sprint - Meydan 2012

The track at Meydan tends to favour hold-up horses and a switch to a speed-favouring venue like York can only enhance his claims. In two visits to the track, Monsieur Joe has won and finished third.

On his most recent start, he ran out a comfortable winner in the Prix Du Cercle at Deauville. Although the opposition wasn’t the strongest, sectional timings show that Monsieur Joe covered the last furlong in 12.33sec, that is only 0.07sec slower than the final furlong Ortensia covered when winning at Goodwood.

On form and the clock there is very little to separate the favourites from Monsieur Joe. At 33/1 (Ladbrokes) he is outstanding value, therefore at the price he has to rate a rare 3-point selection.
