Sandown Tip: Damika

Well drawn and encounters soft ground for the first time this year.

The 3.55 at Sandown is a race I remember with fondness. I found last year’s winner at 16/1 when in the middle of a bad run, and I always find Sandown sprints easy pickings.

The draw bias at the track is massive; you have to race close to the far rail to have a chance of winning. The four lowest stalls are hugely favourable. Drawn in stall one La Fortunata will try make all from the plum draw. All her best form has come on easy tracks; Sandown’s stiff finish combined with the soft ground will stretch her stamina beyond her limit.

Drawn beside her in stall two, Damika should have the run of the race. Although a six furlong specialist, he loves soft ground. He won the Great St. Wilfrid, a valuable handicap on good to soft ground, and with his favourite conditions he is a superior horse in this field.

This season has been frustrating. He ran a cracker to finish 3.25 lengths behind Hoof It, despite racing on firmer ground than ideal and from a terrible draw. Last time out at Ripon he again ran well on firm ground (based on times rather than the official going of good).

It is strange to think this is only his second run over the minimum distance but the strong pace and soft ground should bring him into play.
