Lay of the Day: The Fugue
The Fugue has shown a potent turn of foot in slowly run races but I doubt Ballydoyle will let the Prince of Wales’s Stakes (3.45) turn into a sprint finish.
The Fugue is an excellent filly, she finished third in the Oaks and is a Group 1 winner but the Prince of Wales’s Stakes (3.45) is unlikely to suit her running style.
Her strength is a potent turn of foot, which is best delivered off a slow or moderate pace. She won the Nassau Stakes when the early pace was steady and probably would have repeated the trick in the Breeder’s Cup with a clear run.
However, Ballydoyle won’t let the race turn into a sprint finish. Having come close to winning the Triple Crown, a strongly run race will suit Camelot and he has a pacemaker in the field to guarantee a good gallop.
On official ratings The Fugue has a bit to find with Red Cadeaux, Maxios, Camelot and Al Kazeem. This is partly negated by the fillies’ weight allowance but if the race is run at a strong pace, I don’t know how she can bridge the gap.
