Ripon Tips: Mandalay King

Won 3 times from 6 attempts at the minimum trip. Will enjoy the strong pace.

We’ve got another soft ground sprint in the 5.10 Ripon and I can’t bring myself to back any of the short price horses. Just For Mary has only won a weak handicap in the UK and this habitual slow starter is too short at 4/1 despite enjoying the conditions.

For a 7-year-old sprinter, Mandalay King is still unexposed at 5f with a record at the minimum trip that reads: 167611.

He is a horse who needs a strong pace as he likes to pass his rivals. There are at least two confirmed pacesetters in the field and the soft ground should slow them down enough that they fall into his clutches.

He finished a good fourth in the Ayr Bronze Cup last season off a 3lbs higher mark. That suggests there is still some wiggle room in his rating and at 20/1 (Boylesports) he’s got a better chance than the odds.
