Ripon Tips: Excel Bolt

Was an exciting juvenile and seems to be working his way back to form.

The 7.35 Ripon is a hot little handicap but Excel Bolt could mark his return to form with a surprise win.

Having only his tenth start of his career, Bryan Smart’s sprinter is a talented if somewhat fragile performer. After a promising juvenile career, 2011 was a complete washout. He only made it to the track twice and was comprehensively beaten both times.

This season has been inconsistent but the highs have been encouraging. He ran a great race to finish 2.75 lengths behind Hamish McGonagall on his reappearance and seemed to recapture that form on his last start. He forced an overly-strong gallop in a big field at Ascot, with the stiff finish finding him out. It was still a good performance considering he was only beaten 2.5 lengths.

He drops down in class here and on an easier track, he should finish his race much better. Although inconsistent, there is enough encouragement to suggest he will run better than odds of 16/1 (Betfred).
