Ripon Tips: Alben Star

Drawn near the pace and has threatened to win a big handicap all season.

The key to picking the winner of the Great St Wilfrid Handicap (3.30 Ripon) is getting the draw and pace bias right. Although there isn’t much of an inherent track bias the field always splits and you want to be in the faster group.

The front-runners are all drawn low and I think the race will be decided between those racing on the far side; in all likelihood the winner will come from stalls 1-10.

Alben Star has been knocking on the door in these valuable handicaps all season and drawn in stall three he could finally get that deserved victory. He ran a cracker from a poor draw in the Steward’s Cup to finish a close fifth.

With 5 wins from 12 races he is lightly raced but also a prolific winner. A potent mix. He looks a worthy favourite.
