Ripon Tip: Below Zero

Forget his last run on bottomless ground. He has the perfect draw to make all up the stand’s rail.

Last week our Ayr Gold Cup tip ran no sort of race, finishing tailed off. A week later and I’m still happy to back Below Zero.

To going at Ayr was bordering on heavy and trainer Mark Johnson was quoted as saying it wouldn’t suit the horse. I was surprised given he had won on soft ground at Yarmouth but his Gold Cup run proved the trainer to be correct and my analysis wrong.

Having learned from my mistake, back on better ground at Ripon my faith is restored. The horse showed blistering early pace to win a valuable handicap at Leoparstown at the start of September; when he gets a soft lead he is almost impossible to pass.

Drawn in stall 14 he has the rail to race against and the ideal opportunity to make all. In the Great St. Wilfrid, Ripon’s summer highlight, the big sprint handicap was won by Pepper Lane. Employing the same tactics, she made all against the stand’s rail from stall 17 of 19. Below Zero is in stall 20/20, lets hope for more of the same.
