Ripon Races Tip: Kellys Eye

A big field and we could see a split. Low numbers are often favoured when this happens and there is plenty of pace that side.

The 8.10 at Ripon is an excellent sprint and should be a decent pointer towards the Great St. Wilfred handicap run over course and distance in August. There are several horses worth mentioning but I shall start with my selection – Kellys Eye.

At Ripon the stalls are placed on the stand’s side and often the race develops on this rail, with high numbers advantaged. However, when there are fields of 12 or more runners the very low draws have the option of racing on the far side. So far this season it has rarely happened but with 17 runners declared we could get the first split.

From a pace angle it looks like Amenable is the horse to follow. Always a prominent racer, he should cut out the running and drawn in stall three there is a good chance he opts for the far rail. If he does, then those drawn low could be on the best side of the track.

Conveniently drawn in stall one is Kellys Eye. A Ripon specialist, he has won three of his four starts over course and distance. Lightly raced so far this season, he was last seen in April at Doncaster when finishing ninth. That wasn’t a bad run in a higher grade and he was also poorly drawn.

His stable haven’t had a winner since September which is concerning, but George Foster is currently running two yards with Kellys Eye rumoured to be at a satellite yard. If this is true then he might be clear of any illness lurking in the main stables. At 16/1 he is worth the punt.

Other horses to look out for is the fast improving Pepper Lane and Noverre To Go who seems to be coming back to form.
