Newcastle Tips: Mass Rally

Sectional timings say Mass Rally has the potential to run faster than the hot favourite Jack Dexter.

Conditions at Newcastle should be quite soft after a significant amount of rain fell on Friday.  This narrows down the field to a match race between Jack Dexter and Mass Rally.

Like many sprinters, Jack Dexter has progressed from the handicapping ranks to become a pattern class performer. He is the short priced favourite on the back of his fourth place in the King’s Stand but I think Mass Rally is at least his equal.

Both horses ran over 6f at York on the 15 May and the times make for interesting reading. Mass Rally won his handicap in 72.48s whilst an hour later Jack Dexter finished sixth in his race clocking 72.04s (where a length = 0.2s).

If you take the times at face value then Jack Dexter is the better horse but times can be misleading. I have taken sectional timings of both races and Mass Rally’s race was run at a steadier early gallop.

The leader in Mass Rally’s race took 48.6s to cover the first 4f, where as in Jack Dexter’s race they covered the first 4f in 46.2s.

Considering the sluggish early pace, Mass Rally did exceptionally well to record a time close to that of Jack Dexter’s.

In a race with a stronger early gallop, he has the potential to run a faster time than his rival. Therefore at the odds Mass Rally has to be the play at 8/1 (Bet365).
