Hennessy Gold Cup Tip: Carruthers

The Hennessy Gold Cup run at 3.10 Newbury is one of the chasing highlights this side of Christmas. Although there is nothing of Denman’s calibre in the field, it is a competitive race as you would expect.

Great Endeavour looks well treated with only a 4lb penalty for his Paddy Power Gold Cup win. There is a question mark over the trip but he is probably the one they all have to beat. At 13/2 (Bet365) he is about the right price.

Whilst hunting for value I could not help but be drawn to the 20/1 (Betfred) available on Carruthers. He seems to have been around forever but he is only 8-years-old. A fourth place finish in the 2010 Gold Cup is the highlight of his career but he has now slipped to a mark where he can win again.

He races in the Hennessy off a mark 10lbs lower than when finishing sixth last year, and this renewal looks considerably easier. Other than perhaps Great Endeavour, there is nothing in the class of Diamond Harry, Burton Port or Denman to worry about.

The form of Carruthers is also encouraging. He ran a fine race two weeks ago at Cheltenham finishing third behind National prospect Galaxy Rock. He was giving away 11lbs to the winner and 17lbs to the runner-up, so to finish in a place was a highly creditable performance. That run should bring him on, and he looks the best value of the 18 runners lining up. Back him each way at 20/1 (Betfred) with 1/4 odds for a top four finish.
