Diamond shining bright at Haydock

Gold Cup winner Long Run makes his seasonal debut, whilst three-time winner Kauto Star bids to extend his career.

Long Run – 6/5 Paddy Power
The new star of the chasing division. He followed up a fine victory in the King George with an even better performance to win the Gold Cup. Only six-years-old he probably hasn’t even reached his peak. If you are looking for chinks in his armour, you could point to defeat on his seasonal return in the Paddy Power last year but that is clutching at straws. He is the one they all have to beat.

Diamond Harry – 5/1 Bet365
At his best on flat tracks like Haydock and Newbury where he won the Hennessey last year. Unfortunately that was his only run in a season curtailed by injury. If back to his best he will give Long Run something to think about.

Kauto Star – 15/2 Coral
It is difficult to say anything negative about a horse who been a star for his sport. Aged 11 it is fair to suggest his best years are behind him. It has been two years since he has achieved a Topspeed rating anywhere near his peak. He shouldn’t be disgraced, but he will need a couple to under-perform to win this.

Weird Al – 7/1 Boylesports
Although 8-years-old, he is only having his 10th start after his well-documented injury problems. He won the Charlie Hall Chase three weeks ago on his first start for Donald McCain. He will need to improve to win at Haydock but that isn’t out of the question as he should be sharper for the run.

Time For Rupert – 9/1 William Hill
Held by Weird Al at Wetherby and was in receipt of 3lbs that day. Nothing to suggest he will turn around the form let alone get past the market leaders.

Pure Faith – 100/1 Boylesports
Ran a blinder to finish second in the Old Roan Chase when 22lbs out of the handicap. Step up in trip doesn’t help but not the worst long-shot in the world.

Verdict: At the odds Diamond Harry at 5/1 (Bet365) looks the value. At his best on flat tracks - this is his Gold Cup - whereas Long Run will probably have some work left on him with an eye on prizes later in the season.
