Ascot Tips: Cue Card

His 26-length victory in the Haldon Gold Cup is still one of the best performances of the season.

The Betfair Chase at Ascot (3.50) is a fascinating contest but I’m sticking to my guns and siding with Cue Card.

I tipped him to win the King George on Boxing Day and although he finished fifth, I still think it’s a race he will win one day. The frantic gallop and heavy ground didn’t play to his strengths plus clattering the first two fences was less than ideal.

Go back to his 26-length victory in the Haldon Gold Cup and he should be favourite for this race. He clocked an RPR of 170 at Exeter putting in one of the best National Hunt performances I have seen all season.

Although I think Cue Card can get 3-miles, a drop back to 2m5f will be in his favour today. Last season he came within a short head of beating Gold Cup favourite Bobs Worth over 2m4f, which is top class form.

At 11/4 (Coral) he looks the best bet in the race and thanks to Coral’s concession we get out money back if he finishes second to Nicky Henderson’s Finian’s Rainbow.
