Westwood Returns To Number One

Luke Donald’s failure to win The Heritage means the man from Worksop tops the golf world rankings again.

Sunday night at Harbour Town and The Heritage was not the only thing at stake. A win for overnight leader Luke Donald would have propelled him to world number one for the first time in his career. Unfortunately, things did not go to plan for the young Englishman as Brandt Snedeker pipped him in a play off.

Both players finished the tournament on -12, but it was the American from Nashville, Tennessee who had the better final day. Snedeker shot a fine seven-under par round, which included a birdie on the last hole to set a competitive clubhouse total.

Needing to birdie one of the last three holes, Donald’s best chance slipped by on 16 as he missed a five footer. Good up and downs on the last two holes ensured he made the playoff but Snedeker’s electric form eventually told on the third extra hole.

Luke Donald remains ranked number three in the world but has the consolation of picking up $615,000 for his work. The cheque moves him to the head of the PGA Tour money list and he is 5/1 with Skybet to finish the season as the top earner. With three majors also left, he is 13/2 with Paddypower to win at least one of them this season.
