McIlroy in danger of missing cut

Conditions favoured the later starters and Bill Haas made the most of them to lead by two. Defending champion Rory McIlroy has work to make the cut.

It was not a good start for defending champion Rory McIlroy who slumped to a 3-over par 75. Struggling to make the cut he said, “The story of the day for me is I really didn’t hit it very well, which is unlike me.”

At 90/1 to repeat last year’s win he will need to find his game soon otherwise his tournament is over.

At the opposite end of the leaderboard everything came easy for Bill Hass, eight birdies and no bogeys means the American is now 5/1 having started at 60/1. He holds a two shot lead over Jonathan Byrd, 16/1 and David Toms at 14/1.

Second in the betting is Phil Mickelson at 6/1 who enjoyed a mixed day. He found the water on both the par 5s but scrambled to make crucial pars. At three-under he is five shots back, but with such a good record at Quail Hollow he ranks high in the betting.

Europeans Sergio Garcia and Padraig Harrington are both well poised at three-under after solid opening rounds and can be backed at 28/1 and 30/1 respectively.
