Hollow Victory For McIlroy

The 2010 champion is long overdue a win and Quail Hollow is the ideal course for him.

Rory McIlroy’s travails over the past 18 months have been well documented but the former world number 1 is a class act and it’s only a matter of time before he returns to the winners’ circle; possibly this week at Quail Hollow.

In four visits to the course, he has finished 1-MC-P2-T10. The missed cut was understandable because it came hot on the heels of his Masters meltdown in 2011.

The 24-year-old has the long game to conquer the course and although he’s struggled with the flat stick, previous winners of the Wells Fargo haven’t been brilliant putters.

Season Rank for Strokes Gained Putting (Previous Winners)

2013: 138 (Derek Ernst)
2012: 139 (Rickie Fowler)
2011:  55 (Lucas Glover)
2010: 145 (Rory McIlroy)
2009: 128 (Sean O’Hair)

Apart from perhaps Lucas Glover, the honours board isn’t exactly overflowing with demon putters.

In strokeplay events this year McIlory has finished T2-T9-P2-T25-T7-T8 and at 17/2 (Stan James) I’d be surprised if he didn’t go close this week.
