Wells Fargo Tips: Patrick Rodgers
Enjoyed a terrific ball-striking round at the Zurich Classic but ranked 76th in strokes gained putting. Finished T2 at Quail Hollow last year.
Having backed Patrick Rodgers for the Zurich Classic I took a keen interest in his performance last week and on the whole he played very well.
Although he slipped back to T31 his ball-striking was top notch. He ranked inside the top-10 for driving distance, accuracy, GIRs and strokes gained tee-to-green. But it fell apart on the greens, where he ranked 76th in strokes gained putting.
That has been the story of the season for Rodgers. A terrific ball-striker (13th on tour) who doesn’t make nearly enough putts.
Despite his inability to find the bottom of the hole he has seven top-25 finishes in 15 starts and Quail Hollow is a course that suits his game.
Last year’s Wells Fargo saw him finish T2 on a sponsor’s exemption, a result that kick-started his career on the PGA Tour.
A return to Quail Hollow should bring back happy memories and if he can harness that confidence on the greens he should go well at 125/1 (Bet365).
