Walt Disney World Golf Tips: Robert Garrigus

Noddy Putter

Defending champion is at home on the course. Should make another bold bid.

Like any good theme park, Walt Disney World relies on repeat business. The same can be said of its golf tournament, with five repeat winners in its history. Most recently Stephen Ames won the title in 2007 and 2009 and I think Robert Garrigus can retain his title.

Played over four days on two courses - the Palm (once) and Magnolia (3 times) - the tournament takes a little longer to learn than other events. Now on his sixth visit to Walt Disney World, Garrigus has had a top ten in addition to his 2010 win, showing he’s comfortable with both courses.

The fourth longest driver on tour, the 33-year-old Amercian’s game can be brutal; his longest drive is creeping towards 400 yards. The rest of his statistics also stand up to scrutiny. He ranks 73rd for strokes gained putting and most importantly 19th for par breakers. Garrigus is capable of going low at a tournament where it is crucial to get into the red.

Recent form is fair, a 69th finish at The McGladrey Classic was reasonable on a course that was never going to suit him. A T16 at the JT Shriners was more encouraging; he was in contention for the win until a poor final round of 72 dropped him back into the pack.

Famed for using a child-like putter, it measures only 28.5 inches in length, it shouldn’t look out of place at a venue renowned for entertaining the younger generation. Back him each way at 66/1 with Coral for the best price and ¼ odds for a top five finish.
