Tour Championship Tips: Jason Dufner

Enjoys firm and fast conditions and is free from the distraction of the FedEx Cup.

With the Tour Championship also the culmination of the FedEx Cup there is a big sub-plot to this week’s tournament. Players near the top of the FedEx Cup standings can be forgiven if they become preoccupied with winning the £10million prize rather than the actual tournament.

With these mixed incentives, I prefer to back a player purely focused on winning the Tour Championship.  It’s a system that would have worked for the past two years with Bill Haas and Jim Furyk arriving in Atlanta as relative outsiders for the FedEx Cup. Thus freeing them up to focus on winning the Tour Championship instead.

Jason Dufner fits a similar profile. Lying 10th in the FedEx Cup, his chances of bagging the £10million are slim. However, his chances of winning at East Lake look good. Ranked 4th for GIRs and 16th for driving accuracy, he has the ideal attributes to succeed on this tricky course.

Last season he was runner-up at the nearby Atlanta Athletic Club; displaying his aptitude for Donald Ross courses and more importantly thriving on the firm and fast Bermuda greens.

Having won twice on tour this year, he looks good value to cap a marvellous season with a third victory at 28/1 (Skybet). Back him each-way with ¼ odds for a top-4 finish.
