Tour Championship Preview

Tour Championship

The top-30 in the FedEx Cup standings are gunning for $10million at the Tour Championship. We preview the final event of the regular season.

The PGA Tour reaches its climax with the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club. The final event in the FedEx Cup, the winner takes home $10million. The current top five in the standings have destiny in their own hands; win the Tour Championship and they win the FedEx Cup.

FedEx Cup Standings (odds to win FedEx Cup):

1. Rory McIlroy 6/4 (all Paddy Power)
2 Tiger Woods 11/4
3 Nick Watney 20/1
4 Phil Mickelson 7/1
5 Brandt Snedeker 22/1

Only the top-30 in the FedEx Cup qualify for this tournament but mathematically all stand a chance of winning. Bill Haas and Jim Furyk have won the last two FedEx Cups despite starting outside the top-5 going into the Tour Championship.

With players having mixed goals in this tournament you should tred carefully, especially with the top-five looking to win the vastly more valuable FedEx Cup rather than the Tour Championship event itself. With such a small field, looking at trends is a false economy; we are much better off taking a holistic view.

East Lake Golf Club is a Donald Ross designed golf course, in a similar vain to Sedgefield GC, home of the Wyndham Championship. Another factor to take into account are the Bermuda grass greens. East Lake GC replaced their bent grass greens in 2009 and are much firmer and faster as a result.
