The Golf Outsider: Johnnie Walker Championship

Drysdale Local Lad

We highlight the long shots with a chance better than their odds suggest. The Johnnie Walker is the feature event in Europe.

There is plenty of course form with the Johnnie Walker Championship having been played at Gleneagles for over 10 years, but my starting pick is a first timer.

Johnnie Walker Outside Picks:
Frenchman Romain Wattel has been playing some very consistent golf of late, with four cuts made in a row, three of which he finished inside the top 25. His T14 at the Barclays Scottish Open suggests he could go well again in the area. He also enjoyed two top-five finishes earlier in the season.

Recommend Bet: Romain Wattel @ 140.0

Next up is Englishman Anthony Wall, who has bags of experience at Gleneagles, his best finishes of T7 in 2008 and T10 in 2004 catching the eye. Although his recent form is rather erratic, positives can be taken from the three top-16 finishes from his last seven starts. If he finds the sort of form he did in Sicily when finishing second, he could make a strong challenge here.
Recommend Bet: Anthony Wall @ 120.0

The last homegrown talent to win this Championship was Marc Warren in 2007 and if you have to back a Scotsman this week you could do worse than David Drysdale. After a few years of flipping between the Challenge and main tour, he now seems quite comfortable mixing it with the elite. After last week’s T5 in the Czech Open he is comfortably inside the top 115 in the race to Dubai and should therefore keep his tour card. With the weight off his shoulders we should see another big performance.
Recommend Bet: David Drysdale @ 160.0

I’m going to give Bernd Wiesberger another chance. As mentioned last week he is a promising talent although he tends to play most of his best golf in France. Frenchman Havret won this Championship in 2008 and Raphael Jacquelin also enjoyed some great results at Gleneagles. Jacquelin won the Sicilian Open earlier in the year in which Wiesberger played well to finish T13; hopefully there is some sort of link there at big odds.

Recommend Bet: Bernd Wiesberger @ 550.0
