The Golf Outsider: Austrian Open

A weak looking field gather for the Austrian Open. A perfect opportunity for a long shot to gain a Euro Tour win.

The Austrian Golf Open tournament is being held at the Diamond Country Club for the second year in a row, leaving course form almost non-existent. Given the weakness of the field it is a complete free for all anyway. It will certainly be hard to pick a winner but as long as we have some value we can be happy.

Austrian Open Selections

The first of many names you may not have heard of this week is Argentinian Clodomiro Carranza. Like the majority of the field he hasn’t set the world on fire this year, but he has made plenty of cuts, including on his last start. However his best finish came here last season, with an 8th place after a similar year of non-descript play. At the price I think it’s worth taking the chance that he shines in Atzenbrugg once again.

Recommended Bet: Clodomiro Carranza @ 240.0

Spaniards have won the last two renewals of the event and I fancy another of the Spanish Armada to get involved – Carlos Del Moral. He was going well until a disqualification at the KLM Open, with a T15 finish at the Johnnie Walker and T11 at the Irish Open. In a much weaker field he must have a decent chance.

Recommended Bet: Carlos Del Moral @ 100.0

Mark Brown could be worth following at a price which seems on the large side given the competition. He is a former winner on tour and a player who normally throws in at least one big performance a year to keep his card. This is something he is yet to achieve but there is every reason it could be this week. He finished T13 when the tournament was held in Vienna, and T23 last year on this very course. A recent T11 at the Irish Open suggests he is boiling up to that card clinching performance.
Recommended Bet: Mark Brown @ 220.0
