AT&T National Golf Tips: Garrett Willis

Garrett Willis long overdue a win.

Three consecutive top-25s at Donald Ross courses make him a value bet at long odds.

It’s been a long wait for Garrett Willis. Triumphant on his first ever PGA tour start, it is now over ten years since that win at the Tucson Open. There have been near misses since but if there is anywhere he can compete, then it is at Aronimink.

A straight hitter, it has been the putting that has let him down. Flirtations with a belly putter were no use and it is ‘old faithful’ that needs to get the job done this week. Fortunately Donald Ross courses have been kind to Garrett Willis in recent years, his record since 2008 is: T16-T12-T15 - amongst his best recent results on tour.

At a course that suits his game, he can build on the confidence he is starting to rediscover.  A tied-ninth at the Heritage was especially pleasing considering he was at the sharp end of the tournament all week after an opening 64.

A selection of missed cuts and low finishes have followed, but an opening 66 at the Travelers hinted at better things. If he can keep his round going -he has a tendency to self-destruct - he could be in the mix come Sunday.

At 225/1 it is worth having him on side, especially with ¼ odds for a top 5 finish.
