Golf Outsider: Qatar Masters

Having tipped Thomas Bjorn, who went close last week, I am unsurprised to see him such a short price to defend his Qatar Masters title. After snaffling the 149/1 last week I will not be indulging in such a low price, so let’s look at some potential outsiders instead.

Qatar Masters Selections

Rafael Cabrera-Bello is on a consistent run, making seven cuts in a row, the standout result being a 2nd in the Portugal Masters. Although that was back in October, I get the feeling he is building up to another big event; Qatar fits well with a 3rd place finish here last year.

Richie Ramsay hasn’t made an impact in Doha yet with just two midfield finishes to his name, but that could all change. He enjoyed his best ever season on tour last year and finished like a train with three top-5s in his last six events! Last week was his first tournament of the year; hopefully the rust has been shaken off sufficiently for him to make another good challenge.

This year has all been about young winners but Miguel Angel Jimenez could be about to change that, just as Bjorn did last year. He has bags of course experience as you’d expect, with a best finish of fifth. He was back on an upwards curve last week, for the first three rounds he was flirting with the top-20. With some great results at the end of 2011, I am sure he is ready to ignite.

A speculative punt as he didn’t play much at the backend of 2011 due to injury. He likes the course with 8th, 4th and 3rd place finishes amongst his best; this could be his comeback track.
