Players Championship Golf Tips: J.B. Holmes

Returning to form after illness. Four top-20 finishes in the last five years at Sawgrass.

After undergoing brain surgery last September, first and foremost it is great to see J.B. Holmes back playing golf. After returning to the PGA Tour at the end of January, it is amazing to think he is already putting himself in contention to win tournaments.

At the start of April he finished T8 at the Houston Open and followed that up with a T13 in New Orleans. He was also going along steadily at the Wells Fargo before a sloppy Sunday dropped him back to T57.

Having regained most of his movement in his neck, the big hitting American is cranking up the yards again. He ranks 4th for driving distance on tour in 2012. The signs are J.B. Holmes is getting back to his best, perfect timing going into one of his favourite events.

The 30-year-old from Kentucky has enjoyed some of his best results at The Players Championship, with only one missed cut in six years. His results read: T38-T16-T10-MC-T13-T6.

After finishing only four shots behind the leaders last year, he doesn’t have a huge gap to bridge. It would make a wonderful story if he could win so soon after his illness but he also provides great value at 110/1 with Stan James. Back him each-way with ¼ odds for a top-six finish.
