Brian Gay Heating Up In Hawaii

Has made the cut in his last 12 starts at the Sony Open and finished strongly at last week’s Tournament of Champions.

As our trends article proves, the Sony Open is decided on the greens. With this in mind, it makes sense to back one of the best putters on tour.

Brian Gay ranked 23rd for strokes gained putting last season and is currently ranked 4th for the nascent 2013/14 campaign.

The 42-year-old might be a four-time winner on tour but his opportunities are limited because he lacks distance off the tee. You therefore have to be selective and back him on courses he can handle.

At 7,044-yards, Waialae Country Club is manageable for modest hitters and that is borne out by Gay’s record. He hasn’t missed any of his last 12 cuts and in the last three years hasn’t shot a single round over par.

At last week’s Tournament of Champions he finished like a train with rounds of 65-70 suggesting his game is coming to the boil. At 45/1 (Stan James) he is a solid each-way option.
