Malaysian Open Trends

The Malaysian Open has moved from its usual post-Masters slot as we look at the trends of past winners.

The European and Asian Tours come together for the annual Malaysian Open at the Kuala Lumpur G&CC. The course has hosted the event on five previous occasions so there is plenty of past form to go on.

The greens at Kuala Lumpur are usually impeccable so expect plenty of putts to be holed, but as ever in Asia the hot and humid climate will not be to everyone’s liking.

Top-60 in putts per GIR
During the build up last year Louis Oosthuizen predicted the tournament would be won on the greens and he was right. Westwood ranked second in putts per GIR over the four days.

Top-80 in scoring average
The Malaysian Open has a strong Asian contingent but there haven’t been many surprise champions. Kiradech Aphibarnrat and Noh Seung-yul were already making waves before their victories whilst Matteo Manassero, Louis Oosthuizen and Lee Westwood were previous winners on the European Tour.

Top-60 in driving distance
Matte Manassero was the exception to the rule but four of the last five winners were amongst the longest hitters on tour.
