Malaysian Open Golf Tip: Johan Edfors

Johan Edfors 7th last year

Seventh in this tournament last year, in five visits the Swede has never finished worse than 37th.

New Masters’ champion, Charl Schwartzel makes the trip to Kuala Lumpur to form part of a good field for the Malaysian Open. Along with compatriot Louis Oosthuizen and world number one Martin Kaymer, three of the current major holders are playing the event. Rory McIlroy is also presented with the opportunity to put his meltdown behind him as he makes up the quartet at the top of the betting.

After strenuous weeks Schwartzel and McIlroy are easily passed over at the odds. Martin Kaymer heads the market at 8/1 but he can be forgiven his missed cut at Augusta, it is a course that has never suited him. Having had the weekend off he is a big danger.

Johan Edfors is a player who hasn’t had the rigours of a major to contend with. Since his breakthrough in 2006, when he bagged three tour titles, his career has a been a bit up and down to say the least. Last year he matched ten missed cuts with nine top twenty finishes, he is very much the streaky golfer.

The good news - he’s in the middle of a hot streak. At the end of March he finished second behind Paul Lawrie at the Open de Andalucia, playing well enough to suggest his turn was near. He arrives in Malaysia with fond memories to look back on. His record in this event is 26, 37, 10, 11, 7 – with the best finish gained at this venue. He clearly enjoys the tournament and arrives as a man in form. At 50/1 he represents good value.
