Woods Withdraws Through Injury

It was a good day for scoring with 60 players under par. Tiger Woods was not one of them after he withdrew through injury having played nine holes.

The big stories at the TPC Sawgrass were at opposite ends of the field. American Nick Watney made a flying start with an eight-under par round of 64, to lead by one. He is now 6/1 favourite in the betting. Martin Kaymer is second favourite at 11/1, lying three shots back.

Absent from the betting is pre-tournament favourite Tiger Woods. After playing the front nine in six over par, the former world number one was forced to withdraw with a recurrence of knee and Achilles tendon problems. The severity of the injury is not known but with the US Open just a month away Stan James make it 1/2 that Woods finishes the season without a major.

Graeme McDowell leads the British charge at five under, helped in part by a miraculous birdie at the sixth where he holed his bunker shot. The US Open champion is 16/1, in from a pre-tournament 70/1. Luke Donald also started well with a solid round of three under par. Five shots back, the world number three is 14/1 to win the tournament known as the ‘fifth major’.
