Farmers Insurance Open Trends

Torrey Pines

The PGA Tour takes its regular trip to the beautiful Torrey Pines for the Farmers Insurance Open. We look at the trends of past winners.

The Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines is a familiar event on the PGA Tour. Under one name or another, the Californian course has hosted since 1968.

Spread across two courses, the field will play the easier North course once with the South course hosting three rounds, including the final 36-holes. At 7,698 yards in length, the South course is the longest on tour, so it is no surprise big hitters have prospered.

Let’s look at the previous 12 winners to see if they offer any clues:

Top-60 on tour for driving apex height
Ten of the last 11 winners ranked inside the top-60 on tour for apex height off the tee i.e. golfers with a high ball flight. Torrey Pines is long but fairways are also difficult to find therefore negating any roll with a high ball flight seems to be an advantage.

Top-60 on tour for birdie average
The South course might be daunting but the winners have always loaded up on birdies on the North course. 10 of the last 12 champions ranked in the top-60 on tour for birdie average.

Top-60 on tour for par-4 birdie or better
Par-5s are normally birdie opportunities but with two holes on the South course measuring over 600 yards they are not easy pickings. Nine of the last 12 winners ranked inside the top-60 for birdie or better percentages on the par 4s.

Top 60 on tour for ‘all-around ranking’
The best players thrive at Torrey Pines, with the honours board full of familiar names.  Course experience is another bonus with Jon Rahm the first debutant winning since the tournament moved to its current venue.

Players that fit all four trends:
Aaron Wise
Cam Davis
Davis Riley
Jon Rahm
Justin Rose
