Golf Outsider: Trophee Hassan II

This week the European Tour is back in Africa for the Trophee Hassan II in Morocco. The tournament set-up has changed slightly and is now only played on the one course, the Golf du Palais Royal, which was used for three rounds last year. Two years ago the inaugural championship was played at a different venue, so course form is a scarce commodity.

Stephen Gallacher is the first pick thanks to a combination of price and his second place at the Dubai Desert Classic. He was 19th in this tournament in 2010, on a different course though remember. Seeing as he is a player who tends to go through hot streaks, I am confident he can build on that second place two starts ago.

Bernd Wiesberger should just be an automatic bet at anything above 200/1 in my book. We have already learned that consistency is not his strong point but a second place in the South African Open suggests his maiden tour title isn’t far away. He finished 53rd in Morocco last year, before he hit top form, but it does provide him with valuable course experience.

Tetsuji Hiratsuka is a bit of a wildcard pick but his 9th place finish last year makes him stick out at the current odds. His current form is not brilliant but he did post a 5th in his home country’s Golf Nippon Series JT Cup in December.

Richard Bland finished 19th last year breaking a streak of 14 tournaments without a top-20. With two top-20s already this season, he arrives in much better form. He shot a 68 on the Royal in 2011 so the switch to just that course will suit.
