Golf Outsider: Russian Open

edsaplan.com

The Russian Open is back for the first time since 2008 and in a weak field, our longshots expert highlights three big priced players.

The Russian Open is back but with Tseleevo Golf & Polo Club hosting the tournament for the first time, course form is thin on the ground. Being scheduled the week after the Open means the field is weak, hence Simon Dyson heading the market at an unfathomable 13/1. As usual, the value is found further down as many lesser names could feature this week.

It has been an inconsistent first season on the European Tour for Alexander Levy but at his best, he is a cut above this field. Last month he finished third at the BMW International, his second top-10 of the season. Ranked 28th for driving distance, his power should be an advantage at the Tseleevo Golf & Polo Club which measures 7,491 yards.

After winning last season’s Kazakhstan Open, the ‘major’ on the Challenge Tour, Scott Henry can look forward to returning to Eastern Europe. The 26-year-old arrives in decent form having made four of his last five cuts with three top-30 finishes. Ranked third on tour for driving distance, the long course suits his game.

Chris Paisley should arrive in Moscow full of confidence after banking the biggest cheque of his career at the Scottish Open. The 27-year-old hasn’t finished higher than T11 on tour this season but he won on the Challenge Tour last year and this is a weak field by European Tour standards.
