Golf Outsider: Open Championship 2012

Going against the crowd, our longshots expert has three players to looks out for at big odds.

Soren Kjeldsen gave us a good run for our money last weekend to prove there is plenty of value to be had at the bottom end of the market. With so many big priced players in the Open Championship, there are juicy pickings on the Betfair market.

Open Championship Selections

After a disappointing 2011, Ross Fisher is starting to return to the form he showed in 2009 when he finished 5th at the US Open and 4th in the Race to Dubai. He has four top-ten finishes in his last six tournaments with the only black-spot a forgiveable missed cut at the US Open. Fisher also has Open Championship form having led early in his Sunday round at Turnberry in 2009.
Recommended Bet: Ross Fisher at 120.0 (Betfair)

It is surprising to see the world number 26 at such huge odds - perhaps he is written off as a journeyman American pro – but nothing could be further from the truth. Winner of the FedEx Cup last season, he took home a cool $10million. A four-time winner on the PGA Tour, with one victory already this season, he know where the finishing line is.
Recommended Bet: Bill Haas at 240.0 (Betfair)

South Africans have enjoyed tremendous success at majors in recent years and Thomas Aiken could add his name to the list. Last year’s Open de Espana winner has cemented himself as one of the better players on the European Tour, with six top-ten finishes in 2011. Proven on links courses, he finished T8 at the Open in 2009.
Recommended Bet: Thomas Aiken at 680.0 (Betfair)
