Golf Outsider: Malaysian Open 2012

Perhaps not the spectacle of the Masters but I am relishing getting back to big fields of unknowns, where there is generally more value on offer. This week we are in Malaysia at the Kuala Lumpur GCC, which hosted the tournament in 2006, 2010 and 2011.

Malaysian Open Selections

Up first is Hennie Otto and the South African is in great form. After his win at the end of last year, he is heating up once again with a 5th and 9th on his last two starts. Louis Oosthuizen’s near miss at Augusta could provide the inspiration, with Betfair providing the value.

Keeping with the South African theme my second pick is Tjaart Van Der Walt. He finished second in the African Open which put him on my radar but he hasn’t followed up yet. He was going well in Sicily before a windswept 81 in the third round blew him out of contention. This shouldn’t be a problem on an inland course. He posted a recent 9th place in Singapore so the travelling shouldn’t be an issue either.

Graeme Storm looks to be getting his game into shape and the results are showing, with recent form of 16-25-11. Combined with experience of playing in Kuala Lumpur (8th place in 2006) he can improve on this good run.  Previous visits to Malaysia have yielded three top-15 finishes; he obviously handles the playing conditions well.

After being scuppered by players winning on their next start after being tipped, I’m sticking with Alejandro Canizares. He has strong claims with a 9th and 14th at this course, add a recent 10th in India and it seems he enjoys this part of the world.
