Omega European Masters Tips: Bernd Wiesberger

Wiesberger looks on the verge of a first win on the European Tour

This young Austrian has become a real contender in the last four weeks. Two top-4 finishes are proof.

The bookies are slowly becoming aware of Bernd Wiesberger, but the odds haven’t caught up with his rate of progress just yet. The 25-year-old was already enjoying the best year of a fledgling career before he became a real contender in the last month. Some people would have dismissed his 4th place at the Irish Open as a flash in the pan. But they should reconsider that verdict after he nearly won the Johnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles last week.

The Austrian shot a final round 69 to finish -11 and secure his spot in a five-way play-off that was eventually won by Thomas Bjorn. The youngster is hitting more GIRs than during his first season on tour (67.15) and taking fewer putts per round (29.88), so it’s not hard to see where the huge overall improvement has come from.

Many of the bookies have reacted to Wiesberger’s electric recent form by bringing him away from the triple figure odds he has always been found at. However, Totesport buck that trend, and allow us to snap up one of the hottest players on the European Tour at odds of 125/1. On an each-way bet, the firm will pay 1/4 odds on a top five finish; something this player has achieved on two of his last three outings.
