Donald Returns to Number One with Wentworth Defence

Donald: The Wentworth Master.

The Englishman swaps places with Rory McIlroy at the top of the golfing tree.

Luke Donald reclaimed the world number one ranking on Sunday after defending his BMW PGA Championship title at Wentworth. The 34-year-old shot a final round 68 to triumph by four shots as Justin Rose fell away at the end.

Donald had only needed a top-eight finish to overtake Rory McIlroy in top spot after the Northern Irishman failed to make the cut at the flagship event on the European Tour.

As always, questions will come thick and fast as to whether the Englishman can now end his major drought to cement his standing in the game. Donald is 6/1 (BetVictor) to win one of the three big events left in 2012.

He is 16/1 (Ladbrokes) to be US Open champion in June and 14/1 (WilliamHill) for this summer’s British Open at Royal Lytham.
