Cyprus Open: Gavin Green

Promising starts derailed by injury niggles but length off tee huge asset on a resort course which can be attacked. Ranked third on tour for scoring average and should be winning soon.

After opening the BMW PGA with a round of 67; I held hope that Gavin Green might be able to do something special but unfortunately he fell away over the weekend. Still a T48 finish isn’t bad on a course that gets some getting used to. It’s also worth noting he arrived at Wentworth carrying some injury niggles with wrist issues keeping out of the subsequent Scottish Championship. Fitness is still an unknown but the rest should have done him some good.

This week in Cyprus the Aphrodite Hills Resort course is likely to be new to everyone in the field. A modern looking resort course it’s hard to conclude how it will play, it is on the coast and wind could factor but I suspect scoring will be low again.

As I wrote before the BMW PGA, there is a lot to like about Greens game. He is 3rd for scoring average on tour and drives the ball long and relatively straight, a good trait to have on these courses. His best finishes post-lockdown were a pair of top-11 finishes at Celtic Manor, so there is good form to call upon.

In what isn’t the strongest of fields he is good value at 35/1.
