British Open Tips: Alvaro Quiros

Alvaro Quiros the fast starter

Led the Masters and ninth after the first round at Congressional. Often quickly out of the blocks.

One of the biggest hitters on tour, when Alvaro Quiros is on song he is up there with the best. I was close to tipping him in the outright market, but his form has tailed off since the start of the year, with a missed cut in France last time out.

For such a mercurial player there are better ways to back him - the first round leader market is ideal. The cavalier Spaniard is building a reputation as a fast starter, particularly in the big tournaments. After round one he was T1 in the US Masters, T9 in the US Open and T9 at the BMW PGA Championship.

It isn’t just a fluke this happens - Quiros goes with the mindset to be aggressive from the start. It doesn’t always come off, but he is 80/1 to be first round leader versus 100/1 in the outright market. Given a choice between the two, it is the former that is the most attractive.

Back him each way as bookmakers are paying out ¼ odds for a top five finish in this market.
