British Open Profile: Sergio Garcia

Garcia loves the British Open

Has played in 56 consecutive majors, a record streak among active players. But the win remains elusive.

Best Odds: 30/1 (PaddyPower)
Age: 33
World Ranking: 14
Best Open Results: 2nd - 2007, T5 - 2005 & 2006

Open Record:

Has one of the better pedigrees in the Open Championship; a run of six top-10 finishes in the space of seven years between 2001-2007 has clearly not been forgotten by the bookmakers. That run began at Lytham with a T9, a result matched at Sandwich in 2011. The closest he has come was at Carnoustie in 2007 when he had an 8ft putt for victory. It wasn’t to be, but Garcia still regards this as his favourite tournament.

Form:

Form in the biggest events has been pretty tidy so far this season with a T8 finish recorded at the Masters, the same at The Players Championship and a T3 at the WGC Cadillac Championship back in March. However, the US Open didn’t go quite so well as the Spaniard seem to get affected by jibes from the gallery following his spat with Tiger Woods.

Verdict:

The fallout of ‘Chicken-gate’ may have an adverse affect on Garcia stateside for some time to come as certain Woods fans seem intent on keeping him cast in the role of villain. That means that, even more than ever, the British Open is his best chance of ending the major drought that has plagued his career to some extent. He finished T8 at Muirfield in 2002 and that will hold him in some good stead. You never know.
