British Open Profile: Matt Kuchar

Always among the best on the PGA Tour these days. He is one of the leading US contenders.

Best Odds: 50/1 (Skybet)
Age: 35
World Ranking: 6
Best Result in Open: T9 - 2012

Open Record:

There’s no way of sugar-coating this - Kuchar had a dreadful record in the UK before he managed a respectable T27 at St Andrews in 2010. Before that, his record read five visits, five missed cuts. He missed a sixth cut in 2011, but finally really made his mark at Lytham last year where he claimed a top-10 finish.

Form:

Only Tiger is ahead of Kuch in the FedEx Cup standings which tells you just how well he is playing. After taking down The Players Championship in 2012, the 35-year-old added the WGC-Accenture Matchplay title in February. Furthermore, he is really peaking at the right time after a 2nd place finish at Colonial at the end of May was immediately followed by victory at the Memorial in his very next appearance.

Verdict:

An intriguing option at 50/1, which is a reflection of the fact that most Americans are downgraded for their trips across the Atlantic. Kuchar showed he is taking this event seriously though having come to Europe early to warm-up at the French Open. That didn’t go so well, but we’re still getting a very favourable price on a golfer who has everything but a major on his CV now.
