British Open profile: Martin Kaymer

Kaymer has slid down the rankings.

The world's number one golfer early in 2011, the German has endured a trying 12 months.

Best Odds: 33/1 (Ladbrokes)
Age: 27
World Ranking: 14
Best Open Result: T7 - 2010, T12 - 2011

Open Record:

Yet to seriously challenge but a weekend regular. A T34 result at Turnberry in 2009 was his best major result at the time but he improved upon that with a T7 finish at St Andrews in 2010. The German headed into the final round in third spot, but with Louis Oosthuizen still seven shots ahead at that point he never truly looked in contention to win.

Form:

Has done very little of note in 2012 which is why his ranking has slowly fallen to number 14. The wheels haven’t completely come off, Kaymer sits 28th in the Race to Dubai, but he rarely looks like winning at the moment having not finished better than 7th on the European Tour this year.

Verdict:

Frankly, if he contends it will have come completely out of the blue and at best odds of 33 /1 the risk looks far too high. There are other players in the same price bracket on better form with superior Open pedigree.
