British Open Profile: Jason Day

Day has been a major sensation.

Has gone very close in the US Masters and the US Open twice each since 2011. A big tournament specialist.

Best Odds: 35/1 (PaddyPower)
Age: 25
World Ranking: 17
Best Open Result: T30 - 2011

Open Record:

A T60 may not sound great but the 2010 tournament at St Andrews was the young Australian’s first ever major tournament. He only gained entry following the withdrawal of Greg Norman and would have been pleased simply to have made the cut. He bettered that with a T30 in 2011 before withdrawing last summer to be present at the birth of his son.

Form:

2011 was fantastic for Day, then 2012 was a disappointment due to injury and off-course distractions, but he is back with a bang in 2013 - most especially in the biggest events. The 25-year-old is the only player in the world to finish in the top-10 of both majors so far this year and he could have won either. He actually held the lead on the back nine of both, before finishing third at Augusta and T2 at Merion.

Verdict:

Here is a guy who has only played 10 majors in his fledgling golf career but has achieved top-10 finishes in half of them. Having finished second three times and third on another occasion, he is understandably disappointed that he is yet to cross the line as a champion. He looks a sure-thing to do so pretty soon but his lack of links experience may mean that Muirfield 2013 will be part of his steep learning curve. But rule out Day at your peril.
