British GP Tips: Sergio Perez

Two podium finishes already this season and showed in China what he can do in the wet.

In a season full of surprises, there is little value in the top of the market. Podium positions appear to be decided by a raffle and in a year that has seen Pastor Maldonado win a race, we must expect the impossible.

Starting at the bottom of the market and moving up, there is a strong case to be backing Sergio Perez at 50/1 (Ladbrokes). The young Mexican has already enjoyed two podium finishes this year, that is one more than Mark Webber and the same number as Jenson Button and Sebastian Vettel!

Despite being hampered by the Sauber’s poor performance in qualifying, Perez has driven consistently well in his races. His average finishing position is 7.9 - 4.9 places higher than his average qualifying position. At Silverstone where grid-position isn’t as valuable, he shouldn’t be too disadvantaged by a poor qualifying session.

The other factor in his favour could be the weather. Rain is forecast on Sunday afternoon, and that could act as a great leveller. In China, another wet race, Perez came from tenth on the grid to finish second. With a bit more ambition he could have won the race, although Sauber understandably did not want to risk their best ever finish.

None of these scenarios seem far-fetched. At 50/1 (Ladbrokes) the value is in backing Sergio Perez each-way with ¼ odds for a top-3 finish.
